“21 Weeks” is an intensely personal and emotionally charged digital artwork by Anna Carbone, created for the AbstrACTION Art Group under the prompt: Rotten, Orchard, Sanctuary.

This piece visualizes a raw moment of grief, survival, and transformation. The central figure—a representation of the artist herself—screams at the sky with her eyes covered, a gesture of anguish and disorientation. One lung is darkened to symbolize partial collapse. Near the uterus, a small 21-week fetus appears outside the body, gently holding a fragment of the woman's heart—a symbol of the son Anna lost in April 2021 due to amniotic fluid embolism and chorioamnionitis, a life-threatening infection.

Anna nearly died from septic shock, but survived thanks to the care she received at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta and the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)—a life-saving heart-lung bypass treatment. The experience left lasting damage to her lungs and heart, and ongoing health challenges.

At its core, 21 Weeks explores the concept of the body as sanctuary—a once-protective space now marked by trauma, loss, and resilience. The prompt’s themes are woven throughout: the body as orchard, the infection as rot, and the sacred struggle to reclaim the body as a sanctuary after devastation.

This work honors the memory of her child, Luca, the reality of medical trauma, and the ongoing fight to heal—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. All proceeds from the sale of this print help support the artist's continued medical care.

Printed on museum-quality archival paper, 21 Weeks offers a profound visual narrative for collectors drawn to symbolic, emotionally honest, and autobiographical art.
